Stranger than Fiction

I just finished watching the movie, Stranger than Fiction. The beginning and the middle of this movie seemed just the same to me as every other movie. Obviously a different plot, but over all the same (character development and then some sort of conflict). Then the end came along, we had to kill Harold Crick, but we did not want him to die. He was falling in love, developing a personality and becoming our friend. Even though I became aware that we were not going to literally kill Harold Crick, we were just going to kill his mundane personality that was not bringing joy to the world, I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

Upon finishing the movie I thought about how sweet it would be to know the writer of our own book and to be able to read the finish of said book before we were finished. And like most of my unrealistic fantasies (the most common one being winning the mega millions lottery) I quickly brought myself back to reality and realized my future is unwritten and I will not be able to meet an author of my life. How tragic....

However I then realized I am my own author, I write my own story, just as Harold did. In my opinion Harold developed a need to do something different with himself otherwise his life was going to end with no mark of his left on this earth. The seeking out of the author in this movie to stop his "eminent death" was an analogy of Harold finding himself.

Now why I may not be as noble as Mr. Crick, like sending my friend to space camp or releasing people from their tax obligations, I have noticed a change in my thinking on life. I assure you this change came well before my watching of this movie. For Harold it seemed the catalyst of his change was a love interest. My changes started about one year ago which happens to coincide with a finding of a love interest of my own.

So way to go Harold on owning your story. I hope that I can continue to do the same.

Nolan, Nolan, Nolan, keep those balls a rollin'....RYAN!!!!

When I was a young kid and sports figures were someone you looked up to I only had a few. But one that stands out more than anything is Nolan Ryan. I contribute this to a) both of my grandmothers were big Ranger fans, and one would cut out every Nolan article that came out in the local papers, b) my uncle took his sons to some autograph signing with many different sports figures and got Nolan’s autograph on a Texas Ranger Nolan Ryan baseball card, of which I still own.

I tell you all this to convey my excitement of Nolan becoming the latest edition to the Texas Rangers. I do not know much about the science of baseball and why this is a good thing, but it does give me that warm feeling inside for our Texas Rangers.
